What Every (New) Author Should Know

Synopsis:

A.P. Greenwood, author of seven fiction novels, recently published his national survey of American readers with the title What Every (New) Author Should Know. The survey included a sample of over 700 Americans from every region in the country. To qualify for inclusion in the sample, a person had to have read at least one book during the past year.

The survey addresses some basic demographics and behavioral patterns of American readers along with preferences related to the books they read including:

The survey addressed basic demographics and behavioral patterns of American readers along with their preferences related to the books they read. The discussion will include an overview of the following reader preferences:

What genres, both fiction and nonfiction are the favorites of the American reader?

What are the most popular self-help topics?

How many pages should a book be?

What type of book is preferred: hard cover, trade paperback, e-book, or mass paperback?

What do readers feel is a fair price for the different types of books?

            What kinds of endings are preferred for fiction novels?

            What kinds of heroes do readers like most?

What are the preferences related to the use of adult language, graphic sex, and graphic violence?

How do reader demographics and preferences vary by genre of book?

What should authors do to improve the degree with which readers relate to their books?

            What are the favorite fiction novels of all time?

The discussion will also include specific advice for both new and established authors based on the survey and on Greenwood’s own experience as an author. There will be ample time for Q&A.
